At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting attack carried out by gunmen at an informal settlement in the Cleveland area of Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city.
According to police, more than 10 attackers arrived at the settlement in a white Toyota Quantum minibus on Tuesday night. The suspects reportedly entered different sections of the settlement and opened fire indiscriminately on residents before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.
Eight men and three women were pronounced dead at the scene. Another victim later died while receiving treatment at a hospital, bringing the death toll to 12.
The injured victims have been taken to various hospitals for treatment, with several reported to be in critical condition.
Police have launched a manhunt to apprehend those responsible for the attack. However, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear and is currently under investigation.
South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of gun violence. According to various crime statistics, an average of nearly 60 people are killed every day in the country.
