The annual picnic and outdoor gathering of Big Six Towers , A housing complex under the Mitchell-Lama Housing Corporation in Woodside, Queens, New York, was held in a festive atmosphere. The event took place on Sunday (July 12) at the scenic and shaded Valley Stream State Park on Long Island.
The park was filled with excitement as more than 150 Bangladeshi residents living in the area participated in the celebration. A large number of Big Six Towers residents attended the daylong event, which continued from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
One of the main attractions of the picnic was a variety of entertaining sports and activities for children and adults of different age groups. The events included running competitions for children, ball games for adults, pillow passing for women, and the traditional “Sat Chhara” game for couples.
The couples’ “Sat Chhara” competition was especially popular among the attendees. The Sandip couple secured first place, the Habib couple won second place, and the Mohammad Ali couple achieved third place in the exciting competition. The couples’ event was jointly organized by Shafi Mahmud and Nazma Akram.
During the joyful celebration, Shamsul Haque, one of the leading candidates for District 30 of the New York State Assembly, visited the event and exchanged greetings with members of the Bangladeshi community.
Those who worked tirelessly to make the annual picnic a success included Nazma Akram, Sheikh Akram, Shafi Mahmud, Ali Haider, Rafiqul Islam Zia, Ali Ahsan Prince, Kazi Sohel, Rafiqul Islam, and Mobarak Hossain, among others.
The overall program was hosted by Farida Yasmin and Shafi Mahmud. The celebration concluded in a cheerful atmosphere with the distribution of prizes among the winners of various sports competitions.
