A new branch of Bangladeshi-owned grocery supermarket Kalam’s Bazar has opened in Brooklyn, New York. The second location was inaugurated Friday at 69 Church Avenue in a festive atmosphere, drawing business leaders, members of the Bangladeshi community and local residents.
New York City Council Member Shahana Hanif, the first Bangladeshi American woman elected to the City Council, was among those attending the opening ceremony. Representatives of community and social organizations, business owners and other local dignitaries were also present. The event attracted not only Bangladeshi customers but also people from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
During the ceremony, Council Member Shahana Hanif encouraged members of the Bangladeshi community to support and shop at businesses owned by fellow community members.
Kalam’s Bazar previously opened its first location on Liberty Avenue in Ozone Park. The new Church Avenue location marks the supermarket’s second branch.
The store offered special promotions as part of the grand opening. According to the management, customers can also place orders online. The new location also offers ample parking, allowing customers to conveniently shop by car.
Customers attending the opening praised the store’s wide selection of products, particularly its fresh fish and halal meat. Many said the availability of both Bangladeshi and international products under one roof could make Kalam’s Bazar a convenient shopping destination for local residents.
A visit to the store found a wide range of groceries, including vegetables, fruits, spices, rice, lentils, cooking oil, dairy products, eggs and other essential food items. Catering to the needs of Muslim customers, the store also offers halal and fresh beef, goat, duck and chicken.
A variety of fresh and frozen fish, including species commonly found in Bangladesh’s rivers, canals and wetlands, are also available. Customers can also find popular Bangladeshi snacks and frozen foods such as singara, samosa and paratha.
The management said the product selection has been designed to meet the needs of Bangladeshi Americans as well as customers from other communities in New York.
