At least two people have been killed and more than 30 others injured after a major fire broke out at a hospital in the northern German town of Ludwigslust early Thursday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Citing local police, German media reported that 82 patients were in the Helene von Bülow Klinikum when the fire started. Authorities believe the blaze originated in the roof structure above the hospital’s radiology department before thick smoke rapidly spread throughout the building.
Officials have not yet released detailed information about the condition of those injured. Police said emergency responders attempted to resuscitate at least one person at the scene, but it was not immediately confirmed whether that individual was among the fatalities.
Videos from the scene showed emergency teams evacuating patients from the smoke-filled hospital. Some patients were wheeled out on hospital beds, while others were evacuated in wheelchairs. Patients wearing hospital gowns gathered on nearby roads and lawns as dense smoke engulfed the hospital complex.
German police and relevant authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
