A mayor in southern Mexico has been killed in an armed attack, authorities confirmed on Saturday, underscoring ongoing security challenges in the region.

The victim, Joel Bravo, mayor of San Miguel Amatitlán in Oaxaca state, was fatally shot in an attack whose circumstances have not yet been disclosed, according to the state prosecutor’s office.

Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara strongly condemned the killing, vowing that authorities would not tolerate violence or acts of vigilante justice in the state.

Security forces have been deployed to the area, while a specialized tactical unit, backed by federal authorities, has launched an operation to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Oaxaca has long been a battleground for rival criminal organizations, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel, which have fought for control of key drug-trafficking routes.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and an investigation is underway.
