At least seven people were killed and several others injured after two roadside bombs exploded in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, police said.

The incident took place in Bannu district, near the volatile North Waziristan region along the Afghanistan border.

District Police Officer Yasir Afridi said the first improvised explosive device (IED) detonated as a passenger van was passing through the area, killing five people on the spot and injuring at least three others.

Shortly after the initial blast, a second explosion occurred while local residents and rescue workers were assisting the victims and moving the injured to ambulances. At least two more people were killed in the second blast.

The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Security forces have launched an investigation into the incident. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The region has long faced security challenges, with militant activity periodically flaring up despite ongoing counterterrorism operations.
