Top US General Urges Trump Administration to Seek Exit from Iran War

The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, has advised the Trump administration to explore ways to de-escalate the ongoing war with Iran and seek a path toward ending the conflict, CNN reported on Friday, August 7.

According to CNN, Caine has warned that expanding the war may not produce the results Washington is seeking and could instead trigger larger retaliatory attacks from Iran. He also believes it could be difficult to force Tehran to accept US demands through airstrikes alone.

Citing three sources familiar with the discussions, CNN reported that Caine has raised his concerns with several senior administration officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.

The report said Caine and other senior officials also expressed concerns in late July about a plan for a significantly expanded military campaign against Iran. They feared Tehran could retaliate by targeting US allies and critical energy infrastructure across the Middle East.

Several Gulf countries also warned of the potential consequences of such attacks. Trump ultimately postponed the planned operation, according to CNN.

Concerns are also growing over US weapons stockpiles as the conflict continues. Officials have reportedly raised particular concerns about dwindling supplies of air-defense interceptors and precision-guided munitions, which could make it increasingly difficult for Washington to sustain a prolonged war.

At the same time, Caine has warned that the United States retains the capability to inflict significant damage on Iran’s military forces if necessary. However, such an escalation could also increase the risk of the conflict spreading across the region.

CNN reported that the Trump administration is now seeking a solution that would allow the president to portray the outcome as a political victory while keeping the door open to diplomacy.

One possible element of that effort is a potential agreement aimed at restoring commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor.
