Nepal Floods and Landslides: Death Toll Rises to 289, Up to 1,500 Missing

The death toll from flash floods and landslides in Nepal has risen to 289, while hundreds of people remain missing, including foreign tourists.

According to The Kathmandu Post, citing Nepal Police spokesperson Abhi Narayan Kafle, bodies have been recovered from several affected districts, with the highest number reported in Chitwan, Nawalparasi East and Dhading.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said at least 826 people, including residents, security personnel and tourists, are still missing. The missing include 517 foreign nationals and 127 Nepali tourists.

Among those unaccounted for are 44 members of the Nepali Army, 28 Nepal Police personnel and 13 members of the Armed Police Force.

However, Reuters reported that nearly 1,500 people are missing across flood- and landslide-hit areas of Nepal and neighboring Tibet. The missing reportedly include at least 800 foreign nationals from 28 countries.

Floodwaters have inundated large areas of Rasuwa and other districts before surging downstream through the Trishuli and Narayani river basins. Roads, bridges, homes and other critical infrastructure have suffered extensive damage.

Rescue and search operations are continuing in the worst-affected areas, with government agencies and security forces working to locate missing people and provide emergency assistance.

Authorities are also collecting and verifying information on those still unaccounted for as efforts continue to assess the full scale of the disaster.
