China offers to mediate US-Iran peace talks

China has offered to mediate peace talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. Chinese President Xi Jinping has also expressed Beijing’s willingness to work with other BRICS members to help restore peace and stability in the Middle East.

Al Jazeera reported on Saturday that Xi made the remarks in an interview with China’s state-run Xinhua news agency on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India.

Xi said China was prepared to work with other BRICS countries to contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East and the Gulf region.

He said the ongoing conflict had caused significant loss and suffering among people in the region, adding that the fighting was not in line with the common interests of the international community.

China’s proposal comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Beijing has called for stronger diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and signalled its readiness to play a role in promoting peace and stability in the region.

Xi is also expected to discuss the conflict and possible avenues for a US-Iran agreement with other world leaders on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
