Mamdani to Campaign for Hochul in Joint New York City Appearances

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced that he will actively campaign for Governor Kathy Hochul’s reelection, including joint appearances with Hochul in different parts of New York City in the coming weeks.

Mamdani is also expected to appear in campaign videos for Hochul on social media.

Mamdani endorsed Hochul earlier this year, but this marks the first time he has publicly committed to campaigning alongside her. In a recent statement, Mamdani said he was looking forward to making the case directly to New Yorkers for Hochul’s candidacy.

A September 23 Siena Research Institute poll found that 50% of likely New York voters said Mamdani’s endorsement of Hochul would be positive for her campaign, while 30% said it would be negative. The same poll found Hochul with 50% support among likely voters, compared with 41% for Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman.

The poll was conducted September 11-17 among 1,144 likely New York voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points for the core questions.

Blakeman’s campaign has criticized the planned joint appearances by Mamdani and Hochul. The campaign has sought to associate the two Democrats with policies involving higher taxes and a larger role for government.

Mamdani has said his support for Hochul is connected in part to their work together on issues affecting New York City. The mayor has pointed to Hochul’s commitment of $1.2 billion toward making universal child care a reality in the city as an example of their cooperation.
