A Venezuelan national has been arrested by the US Secret Service near the White House after allegedly threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump. He was taken into custody in Washington, DC, on Thursday evening (November 5), local time.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday (November 6).
According to the department, Secret Service officers approached the man after noticing suspicious behaviour inside a parked vehicle in Washington, DC, on Thursday evening.
During questioning, the man reportedly told officers that “voices inside his head” had instructed him to travel to the capital and kill President Trump.
Officers subsequently searched the vehicle and recovered three firearms, including an AR-15-style rifle and two handguns, along with dozens of rounds of ammunition.
Authorities said the vehicle had been reported stolen.
The suspect was identified as Rony Yordrix Guanipa Crinos. The DHS described him as an undocumented immigrant.
However, the department’s statement did not provide further details about the charges against him or any potential legal action.
