At least 27 people were killed and more than 60 others injured after a devastating fire broke out at a bar in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, late on Sunday (July 12).
Thai authorities said the bodies of 27 victims were recovered from the scene, while the injured were taken to hospitals across the city. Several of them remain in critical condition.
According to the BBC, firefighters arrived to find people trapped inside the venue attempting to escape through the main entrance, which had been engulfed in flames. Rescue teams brought the fire under control before carrying out search and recovery operations.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show large flames erupting from the building, panicked patrons fleeing the scene, and thick smoke filling the area. Reuters could not independently verify the footage.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze after about 30 minutes, but significant casualties had already occurred.
Local media reported that the victims included nine men and 18 women. More than 60 injured people are receiving treatment in hospitals.
Thai Rath reported that several people remain unaccounted for. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and whether any safety violations contributed to the tragedy.
