The United States is considering a bid to host the 2038 FIFA World Cup on its own after serving as the primary host of the 2026 tournament alongside Canada and Mexico.

According to Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House World Cup Task Force, the U.S. has the infrastructure and capacity to successfully organize a future World Cup, even if the tournament expands beyond 48 teams.

Speaking to the BBC, Giuliani said the United States would be capable of handling a 64-team World Cup if FIFA decides to expand the competition further in the future. However, he emphasized that the immediate focus remains on successfully completing the ongoing 2026 tournament before discussing a formal bid for 2038.

The hosts for the next two World Cups have already been confirmed. The 2030 tournament will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with opening matches also taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to mark the competition’s centenary. The 2034 World Cup will be hosted by Saudi Arabia.

Giuliani noted that the U.S. benefits from having existing world-class stadiums and infrastructure, reducing the need for massive new investments. He argued that hosting the tournament in the United States would also be commercially attractive for FIFA due to the country’s large sports and media market.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition to feature 48 teams, with the majority of its matches being played across the United States.
