US President Donald Trump has said he does not see any direct Iranian involvement in the gunfire incident during the White House Correspondents’ Association annual dinner in Washington.
According to a report by Indian media outlet NDTV, gunshots were heard on Sunday (April 26) at a Hilton hotel in the US capital where the event was being held. Security personnel quickly moved the president to a safe location.
Speaking to reporters at the White House afterward, Trump said he does not believe the incident is linked to ongoing tensions involving Iran. However, he added that nothing can be confirmed until the investigation is complete.
“This kind of attack will not change our position. We will continue with our plans,” Trump said.
The president confirmed that a suspect has been detained. The individual has been identified as Cole Thomas Allen. According to Trump, the attacker approached rapidly with multiple weapons and opened fire, targeting a Secret Service agent. The agent survived as he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
The dinner event was canceled immediately following the incident. Trump said the attacker advanced from a distance of about 50 yards before opening fire.
Meanwhile, Trump also announced the cancellation of a planned visit by US officials to Pakistan in the wake of the incident, saying there was “no point in engaging in meaningless discussions.”
