New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has urged residents to prepare for an expected extreme heat wave and use public transportation as large crowds gather for upcoming FIFA World Cup knockout matches in the region.

In his regular video address, The Morning Pitch, Mamdani warned that temperatures could climb into the upper 90s and exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit later this week, with Friday expected to be the most dangerous day. High humidity is likely to make conditions feel even hotter.

City officials said that if forecasts hold, Central Park could record its first 100-degree Fahrenheit temperature since July 18, 2012.

To address the anticipated heat emergency, the mayor announced the activation of New York City’s heat response plan. Hundreds of cooling centers will open across the five boroughs beginning Wednesday, providing residents with air-conditioned spaces to escape the extreme temperatures.

Mamdani encouraged New Yorkers to make advance plans, identify cooling locations, and regularly check on elderly relatives, people with disabilities, individuals with chronic illnesses, and neighbors who may not have access to air conditioning.

The mayor also called on employers to implement heat illness prevention measures, including access to drinking water, cool rest areas, additional breaks, and adjusted work schedules for employees performing physically demanding tasks.

Residents were advised to contact 311 for non-emergency heat-related assistance and call 911 immediately if someone experiences symptoms of severe heat illness, including confusion, dizziness, breathing difficulties, rapid heartbeat, or vomiting.

The warning comes as the New York metropolitan area prepares to host a FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match between France national football team and Sweden national football team at MetLife Stadium.

Anticipating heavy traffic and large crowds, Mamdani urged fans to avoid driving into Midtown Manhattan and instead use public transportation, bicycles, or walk whenever possible. He noted that special bus and shuttle lanes would operate throughout the day to facilitate movement around the city.

The mayor also reminded spectators to stay hydrated and review stadium regulations regarding water bottles and permitted bags before attending the match.

Concluding his remarks, Mamdani paid tribute to French football legend Zinedine Zidane, praising his achievements on and off the field and highlighting his role as an inspiration for immigrant communities around the world.

The mayor encouraged residents and visitors alike to enjoy the World Cup safely while taking precautions against the potentially dangerous weather conditions.
