Three Turkish-owned cargo ships were damaged in Russian attacks on two important ports of Ukraine. The attacks were carried out on Friday at the ports of Chornomorsk and Odesa in Ukraine’s Odesa region along the Black Sea coast. The information was reported by Qatari-based news outlet Al Jazeera, citing Ukrainian officials.
Ukraine’s navy said that a total of three Turkish-owned vessels, including one carrying food supplies, were damaged in the attacks. However, no crew members were injured.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a video on social media showing firefighters extinguishing a fire on a civilian ship and said that the attack had no military purpose. He accused Russia of carrying out such attacks to destroy Ukraine’s normal way of life.
According to Reuters, one of the damaged vessels was the Panama-flagged and Turkish-owned ship Senyk T. The ship’s owner, Senyk Shipping, said the vessel was attacked on Friday afternoon, but the damage was limited.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said that a separate attack on Odesa port injured an employee of a private company. A cargo loader was also damaged in the attack. He added that Russia used drones and ballistic missiles in the strikes.
The ports in the Odesa region along the Black Sea coast are considered important hubs of Ukraine’s economy.
