The Trump administration has temporarily extended work permits for hundreds of thousands of immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from Haiti and six other countries, just hours before the permits were set to expire.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), an agency within the Department of Homeland Security, announced Friday that work permits for Haitian TPS beneficiaries have been extended through July 24. Work authorization for TPS recipients from Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan and Myanmar has also been extended for an additional week.

The move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last month that the Trump administration could end Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Syrians. The short-term extension is intended to provide time for administrative processing while broader policy changes continue.

Temporary Protected Status allows eligible nationals of countries affected by armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions to remain and work legally in the United States for a limited period.

Although the extension offers temporary relief for affected workers, the long-term future of TPS beneficiaries remains uncertain as the administration continues to pursue changes to the program.
