Eleven Indian nationals have been arrested in the United States for allegedly staging fake armed robberies in an attempt to obtain immigration benefits. They have been charged with conspiracy to commit visa fraud, according to a report by NDTV.

Investigators said the incidents took place in Boston and nearby areas. Federal authorities stated that the accused planned and staged fake robbery incidents at various businesses.

According to the investigation, the plan was designed to portray certain employees as victims of crime. In the United States, individuals who are victims of certain crimes and assist law enforcement in investigations may qualify for a special type of visa known as the U visa.

Authorities said at least six staged robberies were carried out as part of the scheme. These incidents reportedly took place at convenience stores, liquor shops and fast-food restaurants.

Investigators also revealed that the operations were carefully planned. In many cases, one person would enter the store pretending to be a robber, display an object resembling a weapon and take money from the counter before fleeing. The incident would later be reported to the police as if it were a real robbery.

Federal officials say the scheme was intended to exploit immigration benefits. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
