Nigeria’s military has claimed that 175 militants belonging to ISIS were killed during recent joint military operations in the country’s northeast. Reuters reported the development on Tuesday.

According to Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, the operations were conducted with support from the United States Africa Command, targeting bases of Islamic State and its West Africa affiliate, ISWAP.

The Nigerian military said several militant checkpoints, weapons depots, logistics hubs, military equipment, and financial networks were destroyed during the raids.

Authorities also claimed that three senior ISWAP commanders — Abd-al Wahab, Abu Musa al-Mangawi, and Abu al-Muthana al-Muhajir were killed in the operations.

A report by Al Jazeera said ISIS and ISWAP have long been responsible for violence and instability across the West African region.

Since 2009, insurgency and armed conflict in Nigeria have killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
