The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has foiled an alleged plot to bomb the New York State Capitol and kill lawmakers, authorities said. A 35-year-old woman from Albany has been arrested in connection with the case.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest on Thursday (August 20). The Iraqi news agency Shafaq News reported the development.

Federal authorities allege that Jessica Bowie had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) and planned to use explosives to attack the Capitol while state senators were present.

According to court documents, Bowie allegedly visited the Capitol several times while advancing the alleged plot. She is also accused of obtaining various materials to make explosives.

Authorities allege that her goal was to cause maximum damage to the building and kill lawmakers inside. She was also allegedly prepared to use firearms against police if they intervened.

The allegations have not been proven in court. Their validity will be determined through the judicial process.
