Three people were killed in a US strike on Larak Island in southern Iran, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.
A report published on Monday, August 31, said the United States carried out the strike on a facility on Larak Island in Hormozgan province late Sunday night. Two people were initially killed and several others were injured. One of the injured later died at a hospital, bringing the death toll to three.
The report said the strike was believed to have targeted efforts to prevent the deployment of sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, carrying a significant volume of global oil shipments.
In response to the strike, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it carried out missile and drone attacks against US military facilities in the region.
The IRGC said ballistic missiles were launched early Monday at Jordan’s King Hussein and Azraq air bases. It also claimed that explosive drones were used to target the US military base at Al Minhad in the United Arab Emirates.
According to the IRGC, the attacks on the US bases in Jordan and the UAE were carried out in retaliation for the US strike on Larak Island.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warned that Washington would respond to Iran’s missile and drone attacks. In an interview with Fox News, Trump said the United States would strike Iran hard.
“We will hit them very hard. There will be a response,” Trump said.
Trump also claimed that most of the missiles and drones launched by Iran had been intercepted by US air defense systems. He said one missile had been identified as unlikely to hit a significant target and was therefore allowed to pass through the airspace.
The latest exchange of attacks has further escalated tensions between the United States and Iran. However, the claims regarding the strikes, casualties and damage could not be independently verified.
