New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $10 million state grant to support the construction of Jackson Heights’ first Boys & Girls Club and public swimming pool.
Hochul announced the funding on October 14 during an event at PS 398Q. The proposed community center will be operated by the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens and is expected to provide recreational, educational and social programs for residents of all ages.
The four-story, 30,000-square-foot facility is planned for 70-02 34th Avenue, across from PS 398Q. Proposed amenities include a swimming pool, basketball court, theater auditorium, children’s learning rooms, senior services, after-school activities and summer programs.
City Council Member Shekar Krishnan said $33.8 million in public and private funding has already been secured toward the project’s estimated $60 million cost, with more than half of the required funding raised. Construction is expected to begin soon, with completion targeted before the end of the decade.
The project is intended to address Jackson Heights’ longstanding shortage of green spaces and recreational facilities while creating a new community hub for children, families and older residents.
