Students in Germany have called for nationwide protests on October 31 against spending cuts in education and social services, the rising cost of living, and plans for compulsory military service. Police, however, have warned that extremist groups could attempt to exploit the demonstrations for their own purposes.
According to a report published by Anadolu Agency on Wednesday (October 21), the initiative known as “Gen Z Steht Auf” has called for demonstrations in cities across Germany, including Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt, and Munich.
Organizers say young people are increasingly concerned about cuts to education and social spending, rising prices for essential goods, and plans to introduce compulsory military service. The nationwide demonstrations are intended to give young people an opportunity to express their concerns and opposition to these measures.
Meanwhile, Berlin police have raised concerns about possible attempts by extremist groups to exploit the protests. Speaking to German news agency DPA, police spokesperson Florian Nath said extremist groups might try to use the student demonstrations to advance their own interests.
However, he stressed that authorities would not allow such attempts to succeed.
Nath also said police would closely monitor the demonstrations to determine whether they genuinely represent students’ legitimate concerns or whether other groups are seeking to use Halloween night to further their own agendas.
