The United States has carried out multiple deadly strikes against the Islamic State (IS) in northwestern Nigeria. U.S. President Donald Trump disclosed the information.

In a post on Truth Social on Thursday (December 25), Trump said that on Christmas Day the U.S. military conducted “precise and successful” strikes on IS targets. However, he did not provide detailed information about the operations.

Trump warned that if militants continue killing Christians, even harsher strikes will follow. He wrote that he had previously warned these terrorists, adding that if they do not stop killing Christians, they will face severe consequences.

The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) stated that the operation was carried out at the request of the Nigerian government and that “multiple IS terrorists were killed.”

Meanwhile, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth praised the preparedness of the U.S. Department of Defense in a post on social media platform X, and thanked the Nigerian government for its cooperation.

This marks the first U.S. military operation in Nigeria since Trump assumed office as president. Previously, he had made several comments claiming that Christians in Nigeria face serious security threats.

Some view the strikes as a necessary measure to combat terrorism. Critics, however, argue that the action could further escalate religious tensions in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country.
