Iran has successfully launched three satellites into space with the support of Russia, a move that has drawn close scrutiny from Western countries and heightened geopolitical concerns.

Defying mounting international sanctions and warnings from Israel, Tehran demonstrated its growing space capabilities by placing the satellites into orbit with Moscow’s assistance. The launch underscores Iran’s determination to advance its technological ambitions despite sustained pressure over its nuclear programme.

In recent years, Iran has increasingly relied on Russia for satellite launches, particularly for missions involving orbital placement. As part of this expanding cooperation, three Iranian-made satellites—Paya, Zafar-2, and the second Kowsar—were launched with Russian support, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported.

According to Iranian officials, the satellites were deployed into low Earth orbit and are intended for civilian purposes, including agricultural monitoring, natural resource management, and environmental observation.

Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, described the mission as a major achievement for Iranian scientists. In an interview with state television, he said the satellites were fully designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, despite what he called “intense sanctions and threats.”

Jalali also suggested that cooperation between Iran and Russia extends beyond space exploration. While some areas of collaboration are publicly acknowledged, he indicated that other aspects of the partnership remain undisclosed.

Relations between Tehran and Moscow have significantly strengthened since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022. Western governments have accused Iran of supplying Russia with drones and missiles for use in the conflict—allegations that Tehran has consistently denied.

The latest satellite launch is widely seen as further evidence of the deepening strategic ties between the two countries, a development that continues to unsettle Western capitals amid broader concerns over regional security and military technology proliferation.
