Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, has been killed in a joint strike carried out by the United States and Israel, according to Iranian state and semi-official media outlets.
On Sunday (March 1), both Tasnim News Agency and Fars News Agency reported that Khamenei was killed during the attack.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump had claimed that Khamenei had been killed. Later, citing two U.S. officials and a source familiar with the matter, Reuters reported that Khamenei was meeting with senior advisers at the time of the early Saturday strike.
Israeli officials claimed that several of Khamenei’s close associates were also killed in the attack. Among those reportedly killed were former National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Mohammad Pakpour.
An Iranian source told Reuters that just before the strike, Khamenei was holding a meeting at a secure location with senior security officials, including Ali Larijani.
Meanwhile, Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera published satellite images of Khamenei’s residence in Tehran. The images showed extensive structural damage, with large sections of the compound collapsed and burn marks visible, suggesting a powerful explosion.
According to Fars News Agency, several members of Khamenei’s family, including his daughter and grandson, were also killed in the attack. Reports also said his son-in-law and daughter-in-law died.
Following the announcement of the Supreme Leader’s death, Iranian authorities declared 40 days of national mourning starting Sunday. A seven-day public holiday has also been announced.
There has been no detailed official statement yet from the United States or Israel regarding the operation. The developments have raised concerns within the international community
