U.S. President Donald Trump proposed sending a floating hospital to Greenland, but the territory’s Prime Minister Inuk Frederik Nielsen politely declined, saying simply, “No thanks.”
The prime minister noted that Greenland already has its own public healthcare system, where residents receive free medical services. He emphasized that there is no need for an external floating hospital.
Earlier, Trump posted on social media that he was working on sending a U.S. hospital ship to Greenland and had discussed the idea with Jeff Landry.
Nielsen said Greenland is open to dialogue and cooperation with all countries, including the United States. However, he stressed that direct discussions are preferable to making sudden provocative comments on social media.
Trump has previously expressed interest in incorporating Greenland into the United States, but the plan never advanced due to objections from Denmark and other European nations. Although the issue recently sparked renewed attention, formal discussions have now begun.
Meanwhile, Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command reported that a sick U.S. sailor was evacuated from Greenland’s waters near the capital Nuuk. It is unclear whether this incident is directly related to Trump’s hospital ship proposal.
