Two people were killed and eight others seriously injured after a gunman opened fire during an examination at Brown University, an Ivy League institution in the United States. The shooting occurred on Saturday (December 13), according to a report by Al Jazeera.
Officials in the state of Rhode Island said the suspect remains at large. Authorities described the attacker as a man dressed in black who fled the scene on foot. No weapon has been recovered so far.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, whose city is the capital of Rhode Island—the smallest state in the United States—confirmed the incident. Speaking at a press conference, Smiley said emergency responders received a 911 call at approximately 4:05 p.m. local time, after which university officials became aware of the shooting.
“I can confirm that two individuals have died this afternoon and eight others are in serious condition, though they are currently stable at Rhode Island Hospital,” Smiley said.
He added, “At this moment, these are the only confirmed injuries and fatalities we are aware of. However, as I’ve mentioned—and it’s important to remind the public—these numbers may change. We are still in the early stages.” Emphasizing the ongoing investigation, the mayor declined to disclose the identities of the victims.
Local law enforcement agencies remain on campus, joined by federal agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The incident is currently under investigation.
Shortly after the attack, reports circulated online claiming that the suspect had been arrested. However, police have not confirmed this information. President Donald Trump initially stated that the gunman had been taken into custody but later walked back that claim, leading to conflicting reports about the suspect’s status
