Measles cases in the United States have surpassed 5,000 this year, marking the highest annual total in 35 years, according to government data released on Friday (November 6).
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 5,182 confirmed measles cases had been recorded nationwide so far in 2026.
According to the agency, the United States recorded 2,289 measles cases throughout 2025. This means the number of infections this year has more than doubled compared with last year.
CDC data show that the country has not seen such a high annual number of measles cases since 1991.
Meanwhile, at least eight people have reportedly died from the disease in the United States, including young children.
Measles is a highly contagious disease, but it can be prevented through vaccination. The sharp rise in infections has raised fresh concerns about public health in the United States.
