Dozens of Democratic lawmakers in the United States have called for the removal of President Donald Trump following his recent threats directed at Iran, escalating political tensions in Washington.

According to statements shared on social media, more than 70 members of Congress—including several senators—urged the use of constitutional mechanisms such as impeachment or the 25th Amendment to determine the president’s fitness to serve. The calls came shortly after Trump made remarks suggesting severe consequences for Iran if it failed to reach an agreement with the United States.

Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts said Congress should return to session, pass articles of impeachment in the House, and proceed with a Senate vote to convict and remove the president. Alternatively, he added, the Cabinet and Vice President could invoke the 25th Amendment with congressional backing.

Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut also supported invoking the 25th Amendment, arguing that no president “in control of his senses” would make public statements threatening to eradicate an entire civilization.

Representative Ro Khanna of California echoed similar concerns, stating that Trump’s rhetoric amounted to a serious violation of constitutional norms and international law. He later reiterated that all available options should be considered to remove the president from office.

The backlash followed Trump’s remarks on his social media platform, where he warned Iran of severe consequences if it failed to meet a U.S. deadline for negotiations. His statements sparked widespread criticism from Democratic lawmakers and drew some rebuke from Republican figures as well.

International reactions also emerged, with references to the Geneva Conventions and warnings from global officials emphasizing the rules of armed conflict and the protection of civilians. The United Nations reiterated that military actions must comply with international humanitarian law and avoid targeting civilian populations.

Despite the controversy, Trump later announced a suspension of planned U.S. actions against Iran and described ongoing communications between the two sides as a “double-sided” ceasefire effort. However, many Democratic lawmakers maintained their calls for his removal even after the ceasefire announcement.

Trump, who was impeached twice during his first term and acquitted both times by the Senate, now faces renewed political pressure amid speculation about a possible third impeachment effort if opposition forces gain control of Congress in future elections.
