A shooting incident in New York City’s Times Square has left one person injured and sparked panic among tourists and pedestrians, who rushed for safety after hearing gunfire in the busy commercial hub.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the incident took place on Thursday at approximately 3:40 p.m. local time near Broadway between West 44th and West 45th Streets.
The area was already heavily crowded following a celebratory parade for the NBA champion New York Knicks, with officials confirming that around 10,000 police officers had been deployed for security.
Authorities also said the Times Square area was experiencing increased foot traffic due to World Cup-related events and heightened public gatherings.
Eyewitness videos shared on social media captured scenes of chaos, with people fleeing in multiple directions as the sound of gunfire spread through the area. Tourists and bystanders were seen seeking cover amid the sudden panic.
The New York Fire Department confirmed that one person sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police responded quickly to the scene and pursued the suspects shortly after the incident. One juvenile suspect was taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered, according to officials.
