U.S. President Donald Trump has paid more than $5.62 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll in a sexual abuse and defamation case, as ordered by a court. Carroll’s lawyers confirmed the payment on Tuesday (July 14), nearly three years after the verdict was issued.

Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan said in a statement that her client received the full amount awarded by the jury. The payment includes the $5 million in damages ordered by the court, along with interest that accumulated during the appeals process.

Earlier, Trump had sought to delay the payment while asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case. However, last week, the trial judge ordered him to pay the damages. Trump’s attorneys declined to comment on the matter.

E. Jean Carroll, an 82-year-old former magazine columnist, accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York in the mid-1990s. She also alleged that Trump defamed her in 2022 by denying the accusation in posts on his social media platform, Truth Social.

In 2023, a New York jury unanimously ruled in Carroll’s favor and ordered Trump to pay $5 million in damages. Trump has consistently denied all allegations, calling the case a “fraud” and a “witch hunt.”

Meanwhile, in a separate defamation lawsuit in 2024, Trump was ordered to pay nearly $84 million in damages. He appealed that verdict as well, but a federal appeals court rejected his appeal. Legal proceedings related to that case are also not completely over.
