The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela nearly three weeks ago has risen to 4,734, according to authorities. At least 16,740 people have also been injured.

The information was revealed in a government report released on Tuesday.

According to the report, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck within a one-minute interval on June 24. The coastal state of La Guaira was among the worst affected areas, suffering widespread destruction.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez shared the latest figures in a post on Telegram, saying that at least 4,734 people had been killed and 16,740 others injured in the disaster. He added that most of those injured had been discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, according to estimates from the United Nations, around 50,000 people are still missing following the earthquake. Hundreds of buildings collapsed during the powerful tremors, leaving many people trapped under the rubble.

Rescue teams are continuing search and recovery operations in the affected areas. However, authorities fear that the actual number of missing people and casualties could rise further.
