A former Indian Army soldier has been arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
He was arrested by Punjab Police on Friday (October 30) from Alipurduar district in northern West Bengal, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.
The arrested man has been identified as former Indian Army Lance Naik Rajbir Singh. He is a resident of Rasulpur village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district.
A team of Punjab Police arrested him from the Hashimara area near the India-Bhutan border in Alipurduar. Police suspect that he was involved in espionage activities along with an absconding associate.
Additional Public Prosecutor Soumitra Sinha Sarkar said Punjab Police travelled to West Bengal after tracing the accused’s location.
“He has been arrested on charges of spying for the ISI and leaking confidential information related to the Indian Army,” he said.
Soumitra Sinha Sarkar also said that a court in Siliguri had granted transit remand to Punjab Police to take the accused back to Punjab.
A police officer said the case was registered in Punjab on October 8. The accused has been charged under the Official Secrets Act, according to the first information report (FIR).
