Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has found herself at the center of controversy after a series of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images circulated online, prompting her to warn supporters about misinformation.

On Tuesday (May 5), Meloni stated that the images spreading across the internet were fabricated using AI. She accused her political opponents of being behind the campaign, alleging that the manipulated visuals were being falsely presented as real photographs.

In an official statement, Meloni said multiple fake images of her had been created using AI and widely shared online. She emphasized that these images were deliberately being used to mislead the public and damage her reputation.

The Italian leader also shared one such image, which depicted her sitting on a bed wearing underwear. The original post labeled the image as “shameful” and “inappropriate” for a prime minister.

Responding to the incident, Meloni remarked with irony that, in at least one case, those responsible had even “improved” her appearance. However, she warned that the situation highlights a growing danger, where technology is increasingly being used to attack individuals and spread falsehoods.

She stressed that the issue goes beyond her personally, describing deepfakes as a dangerous tool capable of deception, manipulation, and harm. “I can defend myself, but many people cannot,” she noted.

Meloni urged the public to verify information before accepting or sharing it online, calling for greater awareness in the face of rapidly evolving digital manipulation technologies.

This is not the first time she has faced such an issue. Two years ago, Meloni filed a defamation lawsuit against a man in Sardinia, accusing him of creating and distributing deepfake pornographic images using her likeness. The case is still ongoing.
